I Actually Have Time for This Now!

Cake given to me by Sam's Club on my last day.

So now, after 6 months next week of retirement, I figure that I have time to start this blog back up. I was so ready to retire after basically working fulltime for something like 53 years, counting my paper route at 13, which I promise you was a serious full time job. Face it, that paper had to be delivered 365 days a year, on a bicycle, rain or snow or shine.

People ask me how I like retirement. My answer of course is I LOVE IT! How could you not? Yes, you know me, of course, I have developed a little routine. I get up with Monica's alarm every morning around 5:30, spend a couple of hours drinking coffee and reading and catching up on social media and the news headlines, then breakfast, followed by a 45 minute or so walk around the block.

Now's when the day really begins. I've set little daily housework chores for myself using a weekly schedule that I found online. I've learned, especially in the last month or so, to make a mental list of 2 or 3 things that I might accomplish that day, and I just do them when (if) the mood strikes me. The beauty of retirement is that there are very few things that have to finished in one day because, guess what, I can just finish it tomorrow. So if I have heavy work to do, I work until I get tired of it and then rest. I'm not going to tell you that I stay busy all day, but I do stay occupied, and without a lot of effort.

One thing that I really expected that hasn't happened was that the time of day would become irrelevant. After all those years of having to be at a certain place at a certain time or have something done at a certain time, I figured that I would hardly ever know what time it was. Now, I am frequently surprised to look at a clock and see how late it is. You know " Holy smokes, it's 2 o'clock already!" As far as that goes, my level of concern with how long something takes has gone way down. Do you ever see a video on social media and think, "I'm curious but I don't have 5 minutes for some silly video!" Same with following a link to an article that's several pages long. Well, guess what, I often do both of those now.

Monica thinks that I'm still in more of a vacation mode, and she may be right. I'm really enjoying just being at home. And with the weather turning and the pool open, it will probably continue for a little while longer. A week in retirement is 6 Saturdays and a Sunday.

Look for more blog posts in the future. I have time now!
